You have the experience, you've taken the course, you finished school and now it's time to take your contractor license test.
To some, it is still an uncomfortable idea. The sound of taking a contractor license test can be intimidating. But you must realize that you will have to take one because it will prove that you are qualified and are fit to serve the needs of the consumer.
What is in a contractor license test?
The contractor license test is a closed book exam and it has two parts. The entire contractor license test takes about two and one-half hours to finish. The first part has 100 multiple-choice questions on law and business.
The sections of the contractor license test and percent of coverage are: Business Practices (14%), Bid Preparation (18%), Contracts (15%), Contract Operations (19%), Safety (8%), Labor (13%) and Legal (13%).
The second part of the contractor license test will be on the specific trade you applied for. Depending on your chosen field of study, the Contractors State License Board will provide you with a study guide. It will tell you the topics on the contractor license test, the weight or percent of coverage on each topic, and additional materials you should study in taking the contractor license test. You can get these guides at the Contractors State License Board office or through their website.
To school or not to school?
There are options for the aspiring contractor on how to pass the contractor license test.
1. Enroll in a contractor license school for a review or
2. Self-study for the contractor license test.
Going to a contractor license school can be very helpful. The information that they can give you will greatly increase your knowledge about the construction filed and your trade. However, it can be expensive and time consuming.
When you self-study for a contractor license test, you are expected to read more and be diligent in searching for materials. Compared to a school, you are free with your schedule but it also means you have to study twice as hard.
Study tips:
· Make a list of the topics you need to study on. Draw a schedule and follow it to the letter. This will help you manage your time effectively and avoid cramming when the contractor license test date arrives.
· Understand what being asked of you. Read the question twice. Or you could read it aloud. Sometimes we can think clearer when hear our voice say it.
· Don't just memorize. When you do that, you have a higher tendency to forget the answers especially when you panic.
On the day of the contractor license test:
· Remember to bring anything that is asked of you like the test permit, pens or pencils.
· Because of the time limit on the contractor license test, go over the multiple choices questions and answer the easy ones first. Just go back to those you find difficult when you have finished with the former.
· Make sure that you go to the toilet before the contractor license test starts. The last thing you need is an embarrassing incident to slow your pace down during the actual exam.
· If you finish early, do not submit your papers yet. Go over your answers for revisions or additions.
Giving your best in taking the contractor license test is all you can hope for. The rest is up to the Board.
